Should I get a second bivalent COVID-19 booster?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if you are 65 years and older or have a weakened immune system, then you are eligible to get a second COVID-19 booster vaccine at least four months after your initial bivalent booster. People with weakened immune systems, such as those who have received transplants, should get the second COVID-19 booster as soon as they are eligible.

However, with COVID-19 rates on the decline in the Middle Tennessee area, it is our general recommendation at VUMC that most people 65 and older wait until the fall when the rates of viral infections, including COVID-19, are expected to rise. When you schedule your seasonal influenza vaccine this year, that will be a great time to make sure that you are up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations as well.

If you are 65 years and older, you may consider getting the second COVID-19 booster sooner if you have an important upcoming event, such as international travel or major surgery, or of course as recommended by your health care provider. For those who have recently been infected with COVID-19, we generally recommend waiting at least 3 months after the infection before getting the second booster.
