Jonathan “Ed” Hayes

2 Timothy 4:7—“I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Jonathan “Ed” Hayes died peacefully at his home on March 18, 2020. He was a kind, loving man who put his Lord Jesus Christ first in all situations. He was born July 22, 1920, to Jay and Mary Hayes in Carter County, TN. Ed received his Associate’s Degree from Johnson Bible College in 1945, his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Milligan College in 1949, and his Master’s Degree in Education from ETSU in 1965. Ed taught for Carter County Schools for 5 years and Sullivan County Schools for 22 years, while serving churches on the weekend. Ed was married April 9, 1944 to Vivian Hyder, until death parted them. He was then married May 3, 1986 to Donna Joerger. He was preceded in death by his grandson Joshua, his wife Vivian, his son Eddie, his son Steve, his granddaughter Michelle Havens, his six brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his wife Donna; two granddaughters, Charlotte Hayes (Punna) and Heather Hayes; two daughters-in law, Jody Hayes and Karen Hayes McWilliams; daughters Kathleen McInturf, Janis Havens, and Ursula (Georg) Galda; grandson Chuck Havens; granddaughters Colleen Harrison (T. Jay) and Keely McInturf; and great-grandchildren Taylor, Jordan, Abigail, Cailin, Brendan, Taryn, and Ryanne. He is also survived by many other special nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ed’s first love was preaching. He was ordained at Valley Forge Christian Church in 1940. He encouraged many small churches throughout TN, NC, and VA, and he served as an evangelist for the Christian Churches of upper East TN. Ed preached at many area churches including Poplar Ridge Christian Church in Piney Flats, First Christian Church in Mountain City, Hales Chapel Christian Church in Gray, Oakwood Christian Church in Kingsport, New Hope Christian Church in Rogersville, West Side Church of Christ in Jonesborough, Highland Church of Christ in Jonesborough, and many others. Additionally, he and Donna did mission work in England for four summers. A victory service will be held at a later date at Crossroads Christian Church in Gray.
